Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. Release date: April 1st, 2001. Publisher: Puffin. Format: Paperback. Source: School library. Melinda Sordino busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops. Now her old friends won’t talk to her, and people she doesn’t even know hate her from a distance. The safest place to be is alone, inside her own head. But even that’s not safe. Because there’s something she’s trying not to think about, something about the night of the party that, if she let it in, would blow her carefully constructed disguise to smithereens. And then she would have to speak the truth. This extraordinary first novel has captured the imaginations of teenagers and adults across the country. Fictitious […]

Go Ask Alice  by Beatrice Sparks (as “Anonymous”) Release Date:  September 14, 1971 Publisher:  Simon Pulse Format: Audio Book Source: Library Get it!:  Anderson’s Bookshops, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and don’t forget your local library! This groundbreaking classic is more compelling than ever for today’s readers. A sensation when it was first published and a perennial bestseller ever since, this real-life diary charts an anonymous teenage girl’s struggle with the seductive–and often fatal–world of drugs. (Summary from Goodreads) Fictitious Delicious Rating: 4 In celebration of Banned Books Week, we are posting a review of a book that received it’s first ban 1974 because of it’s explicit references to runaways, drugs, sex, and rape. It landed in the 18th spot of the Top 100 […]

Book Review: OTHER WORDS FOR LOVE by Lorraine Zago Rosenthal

Book Review: OTHER WORDS FOR LOVE by Lorraine Zago Rosenthal

Other Words for Love by  Lorraine Zago Rosenthal Release date: January 11, 2011 Publisher: Delacorte Format:  Hardcover Source:  Library Read a summary on Goodreads! Fictitious Delicious Rating:  4 This contemporary YA novel has been on my TBR list for a long time (well, maybe not THAT long…it’s only been out since January of this year).  I didn’t really know anything about it except it was contemporary and supposed to be excellent.  And excellent it was! (But not really contemporary…it takes place in the 80’s.)  Rosenthal writes such utterly convincing prose that I forgot I was reading a fictional novel.  OTHER WORDS is a very realistic love story, and one that may or may not have a happy […]

Book Review: WINTERGIRLS by Laurie Halse Anderson

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson Release date: March 19, 2009 Publisher: Viking Juvenile Format:  Paperback Source:  Library Read a summary on Goodreads! Fictitious Delicious Rating:  5 This is Laurie Halse Anderson at her best!  If anyone is familiar with her novel SPEAK (which was made into a Showtime movie starring Kristen Stewart) you will see a lot of the same themes.  But don’t assume you’ve read a book like this before!  WINTERGIRLS is a fabulous story about struggling with high school, the death of a friend, family problems, and an eating disorder.  Lia is an honest, realistic character, and Anderson’s brilliant writing comes through in Lia’s authentic voice.  I would compare the realism in this book to […]
