Candy Box Confession: I’m in Love with a Non Fictional Character

Candy Box Confession: I’m in Love with a Non Fictional Character

There’s hardly anything I like doing more than swooning over the many, many, MANY book boyfriends I’ve collected over the years. Some were fleeting crushes that had me feeling all lusty for 15 minutes and then faded into the background. Others have taken permanent residence in my heart. All are special to me. And here’s where I drop the bomb that is going to shock you all and probably make me lose some street cred: I’m in love with a non-fictional character. Eighteen years ago this week, I married the hero of my real life. Our love story is ordinary. It didn’t begin with him wanting to drain my blood when he first met me.  We didn’t […]

Candy Box Confession: The Inability to Say Goodbye

Candy Box Confession: The Inability to Say Goodbye

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE to reflect on the books I’ve read throughout the year when we start rolling into December territory. One of the things that really struck me this year is the number of series that I haven’t yet finished, even though THEY are finished. What’s up with that?  And I’m not talking about your everyday, run of the mill kind of series. No. I’m talking about series that I love and anxiously waited to hit my local bookstore.  Books that I cancelled social engagements for just so I could read them.  So, why didn’t I see them through to the end?  That question is easily answered. I hate saying goodbye. But […]

Candy Box Confession: Book Buying FRENZY!

Candy Box Confession: Book Buying FRENZY!

As you’ve probably heard, there was a huge, epic Half Price Books clearance sale going on at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds earlier this month. It was sweet! Boxes stuffed with books were stacked on tables, under tables, on top of each other in the back of the room, varying from fiction and non-fiction- in every genre imaginable. There were also tables full of movies and music CD’s. In the 2.5 hours we spent looking, we barely went through half of the things they were selling if you can believe that! We stocked up on books; I got about thirty, give or take a few! It’s super exciting. Some of the titles we found include my OWN copy of “If I Stay” […]

Candy Box Confession: Book Banning in My Backyard

Candy Box Confession: Book Banning in My Backyard

I accidentally wrote a blog post in my Facebook status.  I didn’t mean to. I try to keep my Facebook page light and fluffy, but book banning turns me into the Hulk. And this book banning took place right in my back yard. Literally. It all started when I learned that my school district is banning ELEANOR AND PARK by Rainbow Rowell. I was silly enough to click on the link to learn WHY it’s being banned. (Here’s the link if you’re feeling silly, too.) I went from feeling silly to feeling furious. I know my single voice won’t make a difference, but I am reaching out to the school board to let them know that this […]

Candy Box Confession: Books and Music

Candy Box Confession: Books and Music

I’m envious of those that can read and listen to music at the same time. I think my brain uses the same brain cell to process music and stories, thus making it unpossible for me. I tried it once. I spent 15 minutes re-reading the same three sentence paragraph to the beat of “Shake that Ass” by Eminem. It was…awkward. However. I LOVE to go search out author created playlists after I’ve read the book. It’s almost like reading the book again and really solidifies the emotional connection I’ve made with a story.  I have found two of my favorite bands EVER from author playlists: MUSE (thank you, Stephenie Meyer) and FRIGHTENED RABBIT (thank you, Jeri Smith-Ready). […]

Candy Box Confession: Book Blogger Confessions{1}

Book Blogger Confessions is a meme co-hosted by Karen from For What It’s Worth and Tiger from All-Consuming Books on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month to discuss some of the frustrations that are unique to book bloggers.  Read all about the feature here! Question: Have you ever had reading/blogging slumps? How do you work through them or work around them? Amy’s Answer: I have to admit that there are times when I pick up book after book, and no matter what I try to read, nothing is speaking to me, calling my name, tickling my fancy, or any other figurative expression I can think of. This saddens and frustrates me to think that with all the amazing books […]

Candy Box Confession: Indecisive Jen

Candy Box Confession: Indecisive Jen

YAY!  It’s confession time! Guys.  I *think* I am the most indecisive person in the world. Weeeelll, maybe not…  I’m that girl that fills her cart with stuff at Target and then decides to put it all back because I don’t really NEED it.  I’ve been known to walk through a bookstore with a pile of books only to return them all to their shelves because I feel like I’ll end up neglecting them with the rest of my TBR pile on my bookshelves.  Then I’ll go back and pick them up all over again because I love them all so much and can’t help but bring them home.  It’s this exact type of behavior that leads […]

Candy Box Confession: NEGATIVE REVIEWS

Candy Box Confession: NEGATIVE REVIEWS

Posted October 31, 2011 by jenniferstrand in book review, Uncategorized / 10 Comments

I was chatting with my Capri-Sun loving, Cajun friend Kim a few weeks ago and we got to talking about a series of books she loves that pretty much everyone else in my universe does NOT love.  I haven’t picked up these particular books because of the negative things I’ve heard about them and honestly, I probably never will. There are just too many great books waiting on my TBR pile.  She was surprised by my confession and I was surprised by her surprise.  Then my cat was surprised by my surprise by her surprise.  And we all walked around like this:   :O   *shakes head at self*  Anyway… All of this surprise nonsense got me to thinking.  […]

Candy Box Confession : The final Harry Potter Update

Candy Box Confession : The final Harry Potter Update

I did it.  Never mind that it was seven weeks behind schedule.  I completed the Harry Potter series.  There were some grim times when I thought I’d quit.  Some days I only read 15 pages before falling asleep.  At one point I had to put the books down and take a complete reading break.  Other days I devoured 300 pages in one sitting.  It was a fun undertaking and bottom line:  I loved the Harry Potter series.  LOVED. If you’re not familiar with my first three Harry Potter confessionals, you can check them out here: Part One Part Two Part Three I’m not going to review these books because, as I’ve mentioned before, I’m quite certain I’m […]

Candy Box Confession: The second to last Harry Potter update

Candy Box Confession: The second to last Harry Potter update

I tried.  I REALLY REALLY did.  But.. I didn’t finish the series before the midnight showing of Deathly Hallows Part II.  *whimpers* Daughter 1 is a little disappointed, which makes matters that much worse, but she’s quite happy to be seeing the midnight showing with her dad.  It’ll be just the two of them hanging out and she’s very much a daddy’s girl so I think she’s secretly fine with my EPIC FAIL. Well, that’s what I’m telling myself anyway.  For those of you just joining me in this adventure, see my previous posts on this subject matter here and here. How far along am I now, you ask? I’m currently reading page 1,457 of Order of […]
