Blog Tour: GLASS SWORD by Victoria Aveyard

Welcome to our stop on the GLASS SWORD blog tour! I’m barely coming down off my high from being asked to be a part of this amazing tour.  GLASS SWORD was one of my most highly anticipated books of the year and I am SO EXCITED to share my review with you today.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

The Review G

I know I’m not the only one that feels nervous picking up the sequel to a book that you loved.  Doesn’t matter who wrote it or what the series is, I cross my fingers and make a silent plea that the magic that moved me in the first book continues in the second book.  You guys know how serious second book syndrome is, right?  Well, let out that breath you didn’t release you were holding, friends!  Glass Sword delivers.  In a pretty big way.

Above all, Mare continues to rock my world.  We got to see Mare transform into a new person (literally!) in RED QUEEN.  In GLASS SWORD, we get to see her grow into her realization that Mare Barrow is stronger and more threatening to the establishment(s)(!) than any person she could ever pretend to be. I’m a huge Mare fan! And Farley, too!  Matter of fact, I’d like to officially ship these two.  Team Marley!! (BIG shoutout to Aveyard for making my favorite characters in a story female.  I’m a well-known hoarder of book boyfriends and while I do have a favorite boy in this series—his name rhymes with Siberias—the girls in this story own my loyalties completely.)

My only complaint about this installment of the Red Queen series is the length of the story. Now, this is not going to be a downside for everyone, so take this opinion with a grain of salt.  I feel like this story could have been a good fifty pages shorter by taking out some of the words.  There’s just…so many of them.  Silly complaint, yes?  Sometimes less is more (unless we’re talking about chocolate cake). I can paint the picture pretty dang well in my head without having to have someone connect all the dots for me.  But, listen.  If you’re a lover of more detail than may be necessary, you’re in for a real treat. The GLASS SWORD (and this review) both contain more words than needed.

Be prepared to start and end this book with action galore!  I intended to read just one chapter when I picked this up late one night, and three chapters later I had to force myself to put it down.  I wouldn’t necessary call it a lull in the middle of the book, but the pace slows down.  Pay attention, though! A lot of important stuff happens and you’ll meet people that I suspect will become major players in book three. And that ending? Let’s just say I’m holding a breath that I actually DO realize I’m holding and will be doing so until I get that third book in my hands.  It’s a doozie!
